The History of Domaine du Bijoutier: from a Jeweller’s Estate to a Wedding Venue in Provence

In short: Domaine du Bijoutier (“the Jeweller’s Estate”) was built in the 19th century in Grignan, Provence, by a wealthy jeweller. Having no heir, he left the property to the sharecroppers who had cared for him. Their descendants farmed the land for generations, and the estate became known for its truffle orchards. Restored by Cathy and Patrick and their family, it is now an exclusive-use wedding venue set in more than 20 hectares, just minutes from the village made famous by Madame de Sévigné.

Every wedding venue has a story. The story of Domaine du Bijoutier begins long before the first tables were laid beneath the glasshouse, with a man, a house and an act of gratitude that has lasted two centuries.

A wealthy jeweller in 19th-century Grignan

In the 19th century, a jeweller who had made his fortune chose the countryside of Grignan to build his home. The Drôme Provençale already offered what still enchants guests today: southern light, hills covered in oak trees, open fields and the silhouette of the Château de Grignan watching over the plain.

The estate takes its name from him. The stone manor house he built is today the Maison du Bijoutier, the historic heart of the estate.

A bequest in return for good care

The jeweller had no heir. To thank the sharecroppers (métayers) who looked after him and his land, he bequeathed the estate to them in return for their good care.

That gesture changed the destiny of the property. A wealthy man’s residence became working farmland, passed down and tended by a farming family.

A farm and its truffle orchards, generation after generation

For generations, the sharecroppers’ descendants farmed the land, and the estate became known for its truffle orchards at the heart of the property. This is black truffle country: the Tricastin area around Grignan is one of France’s great truffle regions, and the Maison de la Truffe et du Tricastin is just a few kilometres away in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux.

This farming life shaped the landscape guests discover today: the park, the great oaks, the stone farm buildings gathered into a hamlet, the lavender fields lining the drive and, below the estate, the Berre river.

A family renaissance

The estate was later taken over by Cathy and Patrick, who spent a full year restoring it with their family. Their aim was to keep the soul of the old farm, its stone, its volumes and its trees, while creating the spaces needed to host large celebrations.

The stone buildings now form Le Hameau (“the hamlet”), set around its inner courtyard, with La Bergerie (the former sheepfold) on its ground floor. La Verrière, the glasshouse, hosts dinners and dancing. The manor house has regained its role as the main residence.
