Black Truffles and Rhône Wines: a Gourmet Wedding in Provence

In short: Grignan lies at the heart of the Tricastin, one of France’s great black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) regions, and of the Grignan-les-Adhémar wine appellation in the Rhône valley. Domaine du Bijoutier, a former farm known for its truffle orchards, lets couples choose their own caterer and wines, with no corkage fee. The perfect setting for a gourmet wedding, in summer or winter.

The Tricastin, black truffle country

The black truffle, nicknamed the “black diamond”, grows at the foot of truffle oaks in the limestone soils of the Drôme Provençale and northern Vaucluse. The Tricastin truffle area covers dozens of communes in the Drôme and Vaucluse, and the Maison de la Truffe et du Tricastin, in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, a few kilometres from Grignan, tells its story.

The harvest runs broadly from late autumn to late winter, bringing to life the region’s truffle markets, including Richerenches, one of the best known in France. In Grignan, the Rencontres du Livre, de la Truffe et du Vin (a book, truffle and wine festival) takes place every year in early February.

An estate born from a truffle farm

The story of Domaine du Bijoutier is rooted in the land. Bequeathed in the 19th century by a jeweller with no heir to his sharecroppers, the estate was farmed for generations and is known for its truffle orchards at the heart of the property. Read the full history of the estate.

Grignan-les-Adhémar and Rhône valley wines

The Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation (formerly Coteaux du Tricastin) produces red, rosé and white wines around the village. A short drive away, the great appellations of the southern Rhône valley complete the list, so you can serve local wines from the drinks reception to dessert.

At the estate, you bring your own wines with no corkage fee. The estate works with local partners, including Domaine de Grangeneuve for wine and Brasserie La Comtesse for beer, and couples’ wines are stored in the kitchens reserved for the caterer.

Ideas for a gourmet wedding at Domaine du Bijoutier

  • A local drinks reception in the courtyard of Le Hameau: truffle toasts, truffle scrambled eggs, Drôme goat’s cheeses, Nyons olive oil.
  • Dinner in the glasshouse or in the Lavender Alley, with food and wine pairings from Grignan-les-Adhémar winemakers.
  • A wine bar hosted by a partner winemaker during the drinks reception.
  • A Provençal brunch the next day, on the gravel terrace in front of Le Hameau, under the string lights.
  • Local wedding favours: olive oil, lavender honey or a small bottle of local wine.

A winter wedding in the heart of truffle season

Winter is black truffle season, and also a quieter, more accessible season at the estate. It is the perfect time for:

  • an intimate wedding around a truffle dinner;
  • a gourmet weekend with a visit to a truffle market or truffle orchard;
  • enjoying the 89 beds and the estate’s covered spaces (the glasshouse, La Bergerie).
