Getting Married in Grignan, Provence: a Guide for International Couples

In short: Grignan is a hilltop village in the Drôme Provençale, in the south of France, listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the Most Beautiful Villages of France). It is crowned by a Renaissance château made famous by the letters of Madame de Sévigné. Surrounded by lavender, vineyards and truffle oaks, it offers an authentic Provençal setting, about two hours from the airports of Lyon and Marseille. Domaine du Bijoutier, an exclusive-use wedding venue of more than 20 hectares, is a few minutes from the village.

Grignan, a village of character in Provence

Grignan has around 1,600 inhabitants. Its stone lanes wind up a rocky spur topped by the château. The village belongs to the association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France and is also a “botanical village” of the Drôme, thanks to its collection of old roses cared for by a local association. In spring, the facades are covered in roses, a natural backdrop for your couple portraits.

The Château de Grignan and Madame de Sévigné

Originally a medieval fortress of the Adhémar family, the château was turned into a Renaissance palace between 1543 and 1557. In the 17th century it belonged to the Count of Grignan, son-in-law of the Marquise de Sévigné, one of France’s most celebrated letter writers. Of her 1,120 surviving letters, 764 were written to her daughter, the Countess of Grignan.

Madame de Sévigné died in Grignan in 1696 and rests in the Collégiale Saint-Sauveur, below the château. Every year in early July, the village celebrates her with the Festival de la Correspondance.
